I photographed the nuptials of Malissa and Brian just under a month ago and really enjoyed the modern feel of their wedding. Malissa embraced some of my favorite wedding trends and pulled them off flawlessly, adding personality to her day and her wedding photos. By including some trends but still keeping traditional elements, Malissa and Brian’s wedding became an updated and current version of the classic ceremony.
The birdcage veil is a trend that I’ve seen a few times now as a Chicago wedding photographer, and I find it incredibly chic. I have heard that finding one that fits the shape of your face and complements your wedding day hair style is no easy task, but Malissa did a great job. Even though they are being worn by more and more brides and celebrities, these short, chic veils can definitely add individuality to a traditional wedding gown like Malissa’s. Her veil wasn’t the typical birdcage in shape or texture; it looked like a beautiful modern take on a vintage trend. It worked great with her dark hair and with her adorable flower hairpiece.
Malissa also opted to wear a colored shoe. This trend has been gaining momentum over the past couple of years, with the biggest colors I’ve noticed being red, yellow and navy. I’ve also seen them in orange, pink, purple and polka dots! I think it would be hard to do this trend wrong, as long as you love your shoe and they provide a pop under your traditional dress. Malissa went with red platforms with a bow, which were so fun to incorporate into the photos of the day! They stood out perfectly against the tastefully muted color palette.
Malissa and Brian hosted their guests at the chic, urban Prairie Productions event space in the West Loop, and the reception was catered by Marcello’s. The Event Gallery helped with the planning and achieved a very stylish and modern vision for the couple.
It’s easy for trends to make wedding photography look dated, but Malissa and Brian’s big day incorporated current wedding themes without losing a classic appeal. I was able to capture the couple and make their portraits iconic and traditional, and still include hints of the modern, trendy personality of their wedding day.
